Although checkpoints will disallow it, a physical barrier should be better to avoid dissapointment from retarded people who will try cutting the track.
In this case, i would just use invisible walls. You can literally any use object and set it's scale to 0 (the collision remains the same, changing object transparency doesn't work properly).
